The Beginning History of Greenville Brushstrokes...

At a Watercolor Society of NC meeting at Arts and Materials in Morehead City in 2002, Janet Dixon, Judy Larkins, Doris Ward, and Lou Everett discovered they all lived in Greenville and were all interested in painting in watercolor, but only Janet and Judy had known each other prior to that day. All expressed the same need – to connect with other painters in their area! In 2003, Janet Dixon and her student/friend, Judy Larkins invited Janet’s other students, Lou Everett, Sherryl Janosko, and local artists, Donna Davis and Bob Pittman (also who had taught art in the community) to participate in a “critique group” that met in the evenings at the Admiral’s Cup. The purpose of the meetings included critiques of each other’s paintings in progress, information about upcoming shows, and workshops, and the joy of what each was discovering through their experiences in painting. By the end of the summer, an invitation had been extended by Linda Boyer at the N.C. Estuarium in Washington, NC, for the group to have its first group show.

Because the group needed a name, and the initial members were small in number, they asked others for suggestions. John Core suggested that since it was a group of artists, why not call themselves, the “Greenville Brushstrokes” and the group unanimously agreed. Other artists were added to this initial core group: Linda Griffin, Doris Ward, and Dolly Colwell. When the Admiral’s Cup moved to a new location and enlarged, the group moved with them, until they could no longer hear each other in the location. The second Brushstrokes’ show was held at The Salon in Greenville owned by Pete Riveria beside Chicos’ Restaurant on Cotanche Street in December 2003. By the time, they moved to the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department, the group was generating a lot of interest and continuing to invite other artists in the community to join the group.

Janet Dixon, who pioneered the initial idea of having a “critique group” in Greenville, and to whom 'Brushstrokes especially wants to thank for her contributions in initiating a “critique group” that at times has resulted in an organization with 80+ members! It was also Janet who taught the group how to plan and implement having a Clothesline Show, which has become one of 'Brushstrokes' favorite shows each year in April!

We invite all artists with a love for the canvas and brushes to join us in creating more history.
